Jewish Munich. A city guide

"Jewish Munich" presents an exciting view on the city with more to become acquainted with than "Weißwurst" (bavarian veal sausages) and "Oktober-Fest".

In 2007 Germany´s most spectacular new synagogue with about 9000 members was inaugurated in Munich. But there were different times and the history of Jews has been full of utmost changes. The first pogrom was in 1285. For 300 years no Jews were allowed in the city of Munich. After 1871 it developed into a city frequented by many artists. Max Liebermann, Erich Mendelsohn, Ernst Bloch, Lion Feuchtwanger, Therese Giehse and Schalom Ben-Chorin were born in Munich, Gershom Scholem and Walter Benjamin studied there. Jewish citizens and their buildings, banks, art, mansions, publishing houses, breweries, department stores and marriages with Thomas Mann gave distinction to the townscape. The book offers promenades through the city, to tourist features as well as to unknown places, always searching to bring the "Jewish Munich" back to life.
